About the Distillery

Nikka Whisky was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, often referred to as the 'Father of Japanese Whisky.' After studying whisky production in Scotland in the early 20th century, he returned to Japan with the knowledge and passion to create authentic Scotch-style whisky. The Yoichi Distillery, established in 1934 on the coast of Hokkaido, was his first distillery. He chose Yoichi for its climate, which closely resembled that of Scotland, and for its abundant pure water sources. Yoichi is known for its traditional direct coal-fired pot stills, which impart a distinctive character, and its maritime influence.
