Tasting Notes
Nose: While this is not a bourbon, if we were to imagine a crossover, the nose would be incredibly complex and aromatic. Initial notes would likely lean into herbaceous and botanical extremes reminiscent of Chartreuse, with hints of anise, mint, pine needles, and fresh-cut grass. Underlying this, one *might* perceive a delicate sweetness, perhaps of honey or dried apricot, and a whisper of barrel char if it had somehow interacted with oak, which is not the case here. The prominent sesames seeds on the label would offer a subtle nutty, almost umami aroma, creating a truly unique and unexpected layer.
Palate: Again, interpreting this as a conceptual 'bourbon-esque' experience infused with Chartreuse, the palate would be a captivating dance between bold herbal intensity and a surprising underlying sweetness. The 42% ABV would provide a gentle warmth, allowing the intricate botanical medley of Chartreuse – think menthol, gentian, and a plethora of secret herbs – to unfurl. This would be balanced by a rich, perhaps syrupy sweetness, with notes of burnt sugar, brown butter, and a touch of vanilla if any oak influence were present. The sesame seeds would introduce an intriguing nutty, slightly savory element, adding considerable depth and a textural pleasantness.
Finish: The finish would be exceptionally long and evolving, characteristic of high-quality Chartreuse. Herbal notes would linger, transforming from fresh and vibrant to more earthy and camphor-like. A pleasant sweetness would persist, perhaps with echoes of molasses or dark chocolate. The sesame character would resurface, leaving a unique, lingering savory-nutty impression that would invite further contemplation. The 42% ABV would ensure a gentle, warming fade rather than a sharp burn, leaving the palate clean yet profoundly impacted by the botanical symphony.
About the Distillery
The product, Chartreuse V.E.P. (Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolongé) is in fact a renowned French liqueur, not a bourbon. It is produced by Les Pères Chartreux (the Carthusian Monks) since 1605, with the modern recipe finalized in 1769 by Frère Antoine. The monks maintain strict secrecy over the ingredients and processes, using a blend of 130 different herbs, plants, and flowers, macerated in alcohol and then aged in oak barrels. The V.E.P. indicates an exceptionally long aging process, resulting in a more refined and mellow liqueur.
