Tasting Notes

Nose: A powerful and complex aroma, immediately dominated by rich sherry notes – dried fruits like figs, raisins, and dates intertwine with sticky toffee pudding, dark chocolate, and a hint of Christmas spices (cinnamon, cloves). Underlying these are robust malty tones, oak spice, and a delicate wisp of smoke, revealing a profound depth. With a touch of water, citrus peel, particularly orange zest, emerges, along with nutty undertones.

Palate: The entry is an assertive explosion of flavor, reflecting its cask strength. Initial warmth gives way to a decadent sweetness of treacle, dark honey, and demerara sugar, beautifully balanced by a peppery spice and drying oak tannins. The sherry influence is profound, presenting as dried fruit cake, stewed apples, and plum jam. There's a chewy texture and a surprisingly robust malty core, with hints of roasted nuts and a faint, subtle smokiness that adds complexity.

Finish: Long, warming, and exceedingly satisfying. The sweetness gradually recedes, leaving a persistent, lingering spice of black pepper and ginger, coupled with a dry, oaky grip. The sherry fruit notes gently fade, leaving echoes of dark chocolate and a hint of espresso. A touch of bitterness from the oak provides structure, and the warmth of the alcohol slowly dissipates, inviting another sip.

About the Distillery

Glenfarclas, meaning 'Valley of the Green Grassland,' is a family-owned Speyside distillery established in 1836. Unusually, it remains entirely in the hands of the Grant family, now in its sixth generation. This independence affords them the luxury of long-term planning and adherence to traditional methods, most notably their dedication to sherry cask maturation, which defines their distinctive house style. They are known for producing a robust, full-bodied spirit.
