Old Forester BIB 1988
The year 1988 marked the release of this venerable Old Forester, a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky Bonded to a minimum of 100 proof, as per the strict Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. This vintage pour stands as a proud homage to time-honored distillation methods, offering a profound taste of bourbon history in every glass.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A captivating harmony of rich caramel, dried orange peel, and well-aged oak immediately greets the nose. Underlying notes of spicy rye, a whisper of vanilla bean, and a delicate floral quality emerge, hinting at the bourbon's pre-prohibition style origins. A faint whiff of leather and pipe tobacco adds complexity.
Palate: The palate arrives with a robust and full-bodied presence, a testament to its bottled-in-bond proof. Creamy vanilla and butterscotch lead, quickly followed by a bold wave of cinnamon, baking spice, and a delightful pepperiness from the rye. Dark cherry and fig notes interweave with toasted nuts and a hint of dark chocolate, providing a satisfying depth. The oak influence is substantial but beautifully integrated, offering a pleasant dryness without bitterness.
Finish: Long and intensely satisfying, the finish lingers with sweet oak, a gentle warmth of spice, and a touch of roasted coffee. A return of dried fruit and a subtle, pleasant tannic grip leave a lasting impression of quality and historical character. It fades gracefully, inviting another pour.
About the Distillery
Established in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, Old Forester holds the distinction of being the first bourbon to be sold exclusively in sealed glass bottles, a pioneering move to ensure quality and prevent adulteration. The distillery has a rich history of continuous production, even through Prohibition due to its medical whiskey permits, and remains a testament to traditional Kentucky bourbon craftsmanship.
