Tasting Notes

Nose: Given its sherry butt maturation and age, expect an incredibly rich and complex bouquet. Dominant notes of dark dried fruits immediately greet the nose – think sultanas, figs, and rum-soaked raisins. These are intertwined with sweet, caramelized undertones like treacle and brown sugar, and a hint of sticky toffee pudding. A subtle yet distinct nuttiness, perhaps roasted almonds or walnuts, emerges, alongside delicate baking spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. There's an underlying oak influence, presenting as old leather and polished antique furniture, softened by a whisper of floral honey and perhaps a distant maritime saltiness, characteristic of some Speyside malts, even when heavily sherried. The high proof suggests a powerful delivery, but the age should have mellowed any harsh alcohol vapors, leaving a sophisticated and inviting aroma.

Palate: The entry will be full-bodied and viscous, coating the tongue with its richness. The initial burst of flavor mirrors the nose, with an explosion of sweet sherry influence – dark cherry compote, plum jam, and candied orange peel. The sweetness is beautifully balanced by a wave of warming spices, including star anise, clove, and a touch of ginger. As it develops, a nutty character emerges, marrying with dark chocolate and espresso notes, hinting at the sherry butt's savory complexity. The oak influence becomes more prominent here, but it's well-integrated, providing structure with hints of tobacco leaf and cedar rather than overt bitterness. The high ABV (57.5%) will deliver a satisfying warmth that spreads gracefully, unlocking even deeper layers of flavor – possibly a subtle malty sweetness and a touch of savory umami.

Finish: The finish will be exceptionally long and evolving, a testament to its age and cask influence. It lingers with persistent notes of dried fruit and luxurious dark chocolate, slowly fading into pleasant oak tannins and a gentle hum of residual spice. Hints of espresso and a delightful nuttiness will persist. The warmth of the alcohol slowly recedes, leaving behind a comforting, slightly dry, and immensely satisfying impression. Traces of old leather and a faint hint of minerality might emerge as the very last notes fade, inviting another sip.

About the Distillery

Inchgower Distillery is a lesser-known Speyside distillery acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1936. Its spirits are primarily used in blends, most notably Bell's and Johnnie Walker. While its single malt releases are somewhat rare, they are highly regarded by connoisseurs for their robust and slightly oily character, often exhibiting a coastal or maritime influence despite its inland location. Inchgower's spirit takes well to sherry cask maturation, often leading to complex and deep flavor profiles.
